This brief policy describes in clear language what information we collect and how it is used. As you read the policy, keep in mind it applies to all Leave The Pack Behind websites (“Sites”), brands, products, programs, and services.

Depending on which programs or services or Sites you use, we collect various kinds of information from or about you, as detailed below.

  • Personal information

    We may collect personal information from you in a variety of ways, including, but not limited to, when you visit our Sites, fill out a form or survey, or engage in other activities, services, features or resources we make available on our Sites. You may be asked for, as appropriate, your name, email address, phone number, and address. You may also be asked about other demographic and personal characteristics about yourself such as, but not limited to, your age, gender, level of education, smoking history and so on.

    We will collect personal information if you voluntarily submit such information to us. You can always refuse to supply personal information, except that it may prevent you from engaging in certain Site related activities or receiving products and services offered by Leave The Pack Behind. We will always be upfront about the type of information we are collecting and why we are collecting it.

  • Non-personal information

    We may collect non-personal information about your interaction with our Sites. Non-personal information may include the browser name, the type of computer or mobile device you are using, and technical information about how you’ve connected to our Sites, such as your operating system, the Internet service providers utilized, and other similar information.

    The information is analyzed for ways to improve our Sites. We cannot identify you from this information.

How do we use this information?

We are passionate about educating young adults about the harmful effects of commercial tobacco and alternative tobacco/nicotine products and engaging smokers in the quitting process. We use the information collected to help provide and support our programs and services.

Specifically, we use this information to:

  • provide, improve and develop programs and services to better meet your needs;
  • run surveys, promotions, contests or other site features;
  • communicate with you

Leave The Pack Behind will never use your information in any way other than those outlined above, or without obtaining your consent.

How do we protect your data and privacy?

We use up-to-date, appropriate data collection, storage and processing practices, and security measures to protect against unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure or destruction of your personal information, username, password, transaction information, and data stored on our Sites. All information collected from you will be kept confidential as required by applicable privacy laws.

Sensitive and private data exchange between you and our Sites happens over a SSL secured communication channel and is encrypted and protected with digital signatures.

Who controls the data?

Brock University (where Leave The Pack Behind is housed) is your data controller. Brock University protects your privacy and your personal information. The personal information requested is collected under the authority of The Brock University Act, 1964, and in accordance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA).

How is this information shared?

We do not sell, trade, or rent data collected from you. We may share generic aggregated demographic information not linked to any personal information with our community partners and stakeholders for the purposes outlined above.

Please note: In the event of legal reasons or in the event of a dispute, Leave The Pack Behind may share your information if we believe it is required by applicable law, regulation, legal process or government request.

For example, this includes sharing your information with law enforcement officials, government authorities, or other third parties as necessary to enforce our Terms of Service, to protect Brock University’s rights or property or the rights or property of others, or in the event of a claim or dispute relating to your use of our services.

How can I manage or delete information about me?

You can delete your account and/or data at any time, for any reasons with no penalty.

If you’ve created a Leave The Pack Behind “User” account, you can manage the content and information you share when you log in to your account.

We store data for as long as it is necessary to provide products and services to you. Information associated with your account will be kept until your account is deleted, or unless we no longer need the data to provide products and services.

How can I control my communication preferences?

If you’ve created a Leave The Pack Behind “User” account, you can manage the communication you receive when you log in to your account.

Alternatively, you can “unsubscribe” from mailings within the e-mail communication you receive.

Cookies and Third-Party Technologies

  • Web browser cookies

    Our Sites may use “cookies” to enhance your experience. Your web browser places cookies on your hard drive for record-keeping purposes and sometimes to track information about you. You may choose to set your web browser to refuse cookies, or to send an alert when cookies are being sent. If your web browser refuses cookies, note that some parts of our Sites may not function properly.

  • Web analytics

    In order to serve you better, we use web analytics services including Google Analytics to help analyse the use of our Sites. These tools use cookies to collect and generate information about your visits to our Sites (including your IP address) that is transmitted to their servers in an anonymous form for processing. We study patterns of website activity so we can improve the experience of our Sites. The use of these tools does not allow us to identify individuals.

Leave The Pack Behind has the discretion to update this policy at any time. When we do, we will revise the last modified date at the bottom of this page. Additionally, if you’ve created a Leave The Pack Behind “User” account, we may send you an email notification of the policy update. We encourage you to frequently check this page for any changes to stay informed about how we are helping to protect the personal information we collect. You acknowledge and agree that it is your responsibility to review this privacy policy periodically and become aware of modifications.

Your acceptance of these terms

By using our Sites or creating a Leave The Pack Behind “User” account, you agree to our Terms and that you have read our policy. If you do not agree to this policy, please do not use our Sites or create an account. Your continued use of our Sites following the posting of changes to this policy will be deemed your acceptance of those changes.
