Make Your Deal and Win!

 

Whether you smoke a pack a day, a pack a week, or
just when you feel like it, we have a deal for you! You can win
$$$$ by entering the
Let’s Make A Deal!
contest. Register your ‘deal’ between January 15th and January
17th 2003, and you’ll be in the draw for a prize.

So what’s the deal?

All winners must meet eligibility criteria as described in
contest rules

 

To enter the contest you must be a student/staff & one of
the following

  • A regular smoker
  • A casual smoker
  • Someone who does not smoke

How to enter the contest

Step 1 – Find your ‘Witnesses’ & ‘Buddy’

Step 2 – Register at a Leave The Pack Behind display from
January 15th-17th, 2003

Step 3 – Start your ‘deal’ on Friday, January 17th, 2003

‘Buddies’ (click here for buddy & witness
instructions)

All contestants must have one non-smoking ‘Witness’ and a
‘Buddy’ to support them throughout the campaign.
‘Witnesses’/’Buddies’ can be anyone, although only buddies who
are currently students/staff of participating Leave
The Pack Behind
campuses can be entered in the
‘Witness/Buddy’ prize draw. $$$ prizes will be awarded for this
draw too.

Can’t find a ‘Buddy’? Although you must find one person to be
your non-smoking ‘Witness’, if you have difficulty finding a
‘Buddy’ to support you, just ask the Leave
The Pack Behind
students to be your ‘Buddy’. ‘Buddies’
can contact Leave The Pack Behind to receive tips for helping
someone quit or reduce smoking.

 

You
don’t have to do this alone! Leave The Pack Behind

student-staff are available to help all contestants quit or reduce
smoking. As a contestant, you will be provided with an assessment
to help with quitting and will be given a Survival Kit to help you
keep your part of the deal. Quit-smoking
aids are encouraged!
If you’re quitting, you may wish
to use nicotine gum, ‘the patch’ or zyban. Staff at Student Health
Services will be ready to assist you with these products and to
help you handle nicotine withdrawal symptoms.

 

Contest Rules

Deal #1- Quit for Good!: quit smoking completely.

  • You must register on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, January
    15th – 17th, 2003. At registration, your ‘Witness’ and your
    ‘Buddy’ must sign the registration form to get you into the
    contest. As well, you will have your first Smokalyzer test of
    the carbon monoxide level in the air you exhale.
  • You must have one non-smoking ‘Witness’ and one ‘Buddy’ to
    assist you. Both will be your witnesses that you have really quit
    smoking for the duration of the contest (beginning January
    17th).
  • All contestants in this category are entered in the initial
    prize draw.
  • If your name is drawn in the initial round, you may be
    eligible for the final prize draw. To determine your
    eligibility, you must repeat a CO test, do a cotinine test,
    and submit signed testimony from your ‘Witness’ and your
    ‘Buddy’ confirming that you were smoke free.
  • To enter this category you must be a regular smoker.

Deal #2 – Keep The Count!: reduce consumption by 50%.

  • You must register on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, January
    15th – 17th, 2003. At registration, your ‘Witness’ and your
    ‘Buddy’ must sign the registration form to get you into the
    contest. As well, you will have your first Smokalyzer test of
    the carbon monoxide level in the air you exhale.
  • You must have a non-smoking ‘Witnesses’ and a ‘Buddy’ to
    assist you. Both will be your witnesses that you reduced by
    50% the number of cigarettes you smoked throughout the
    contest. If your name is drawn at the end of the contest, both
    your ‘Witness’ and your ‘Buddy’ must confirm that you have
    succeeded in cutting back your smoking for the duration of the
    contest.
  • All contestants in this category are entered in the initial
    prize draw.
  • If your name is drawn in the initial round, you may be
    eligible for the final prize draw. To determine your
    eligibility, you must repeat your Smokalyzer test and have
    signed testimony from your ‘Witness’ and your ‘Buddy’
    confirming that you succeeded in cutting back your smoking
    throughout the contest
  • To enter this category you must be a regular smoker.
    See previous definition.

Deal #3 – Party Without The Pack!: break the alcohol-tobacco
pairing.

  • You must register on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, January
    15th – 17th, 2003. At registration, your ‘Witness’ and your
    ‘Buddy’ must sign the registration form to get you into the
    contest. As well, you will have your first Smokalyzer test of
    the carbon monoxide level in the air you exhale.
  • You must have a non-smoking ‘Witness’ and a ‘Buddy’ to
    assist you. Both will be your witnesses that you remained
    smoke free every time you consumed alcohol, for four
    consecutive weeks during the contest.
  • All contestants in this category are entered in the initial
    prize draw.
  • If your name is drawn in the initial round, you may be
    eligible for the final prize draw. To determine your
    eligibility, you must repeat your Smokalyzer test and submit
    signed testimony from your ‘Witness’ and your ‘Buddy’
    confirming that you were smoke free while drinking alcohol.
  • To enter this category you must have a history of
    smoking cigarettes when you drink alcohol – regardless of
    whether or not you smoke under other circumstances.

Deal #4 – Don’t Start And Win!: continue to be completely
smoke free.

  • You must register on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, January
    15th – 17th, 2003. At registration, your ‘Witness’ and your
    ‘Buddy’ must sign the registration form to get you into the
    contest. As well, you will have your first Smokalyzer test of
    the carbon monoxide level in the air you exhale.
  • You must have a non-smoking ‘Witness’ and a ‘Buddy’ who will
    confirm that you stayed smoke free throughout the contest.
  • All contestants in this category are entered in the initial
    prize draw.
  • If your name is drawn in the initial round, you may be
    eligible for the final prize draw. To determine your
    eligibility, you must repeat your Smokalyzer test and have
    signed testimony from your ‘Witness’ and your ‘Buddy’
    confirming that you stayed smoke-free throughout the contest
  • To enter this category you must be a non-smoker or
    ex-smoker. See previous definitions.

 

Let’s Make a Deal!: Witnesses’ Instructions

To be eligible to be a ‘Witness’ you must be a non-smoker

A Non-Smoker

  • Someone who does not smoke at all
  • Can be an ex-smoker who quit more than a month ago and who
    has not had a cigarette in a month

During Registration

  • You are there as a ‘Witness’ for your contestant who is
    entering into any of these deals: Keep The Count, Party
    Without The Pack, or Don’t Start and Win
  • You must confirm the smoking status of your contestant
  • ID will be required
  • Review the registration form and sign

During the Contest

  • Keep in close contact (at least once a week) with your
    contestant whom you are supporting and/or monitoring
  • Keep them focused on their deal
  • Keep track of weekly progress of your contestant with a
    short written report
  • You must also be available to help your contestant during
    the contest

Contest Draw

  • You will be required to validate that your contestant in the
    contest has followed the rules and achieved the goal of their
    specific deal
  • You will be required to hand in your written report
  • You will be entered into the “Buddy/Witness’ Draw
  • At any time during the contest you are welcome to contact
    Student Health Services for information on how to help your
    contestant.

 

Let’s Make a Deal!: ‘Buddy’ Instructions

To be eligible to be a ‘Buddy’ you must be willing to support
your friend and help them meet the requirements of the ‘deal’ they
have chosen.

  • A ‘Buddy’ may be a smoker or a non-smoker.

During Registration

  • For Quit For Good and Keep The Count deals, you must confirm
    that your friend is a regular smoker
  • For Party Without The Pack you must confirm that your friend
    regularly smokes while drinking alcohol
  • For Don’t Start And Win you must confirm that your friend is
    a non-smoker.
  • ID will be required
  • Review the registration form and sign

During the Contest

  • Keep in close contact (at least once a week) with your
    friend whom you are supporting
  • Keep them focused on their deal
  • Keep track of weekly progress of your friend with a written
    report
  • You must also be available to help your friend during the
    contest

Contest Draw

If your friend’s name is drawn,
