Objectives and Components of LTPB

Objectives

Leave The Pack Behind is made up of 4 key features:

  • 1. LTPB integrates programs, services, policies, structures and supports in order to create a well rounded approach to supporting students' needs.
  • 2. LTPB peer health educators work closely with their campus health clinic by referring students from booth displays & walkabouts to the clinic.
  • 3. LTPB is peer-driven where students are the frontline in helping other students reduce and/or quit their smoking behaviour
  • 4. LTPB peer health educators network with campus health professionals, campus administration and student government

The components of Leave The Pack Behind are:

Communication Campaign - Student-team members design and implement year-long, campus-specific communication campaigns to promote all of LTPB's programs and services and to denormalize the tobacco industry. The communication campaign uses mass media as well as lots of interpersonal outreach through communication channels such as display tables, residence presentations, classroom announcements and so on.

Programs and Services - LTPB offers several self-help programs including the SMOKE|QUIT and U KNOW U WANT 2 booklets. LTPB also hosts an awesome website that includes webpages for each campus, a highly interactive smoking cessation intervention called e-SMOKE|QUIT, a LTPB Blog, an EXTRA-EXTRA posting and an interactive music player. Annual, in conjunction with National Non-Smoking Week, LTPB runs a Contest called Let's Make A Deal! involving contestants who are smokers, ex-smokers, non-smokers and social smokers alike. Other smoking prevention and cessation programs and services offered by LTPB in CO testing (to measure carbon monoxide in exhaled air) and brief campus based clinical tobacco intervention offered by medical professionals in campus health centres and clinics. Having this wide range of programs and services allows LTPB to offer smokers highly personalized information and support.

Evaluation - Program evaluation is an integral component of LTPB, and everyone involved with LTPB helps evaluate the success of the initiative. Each year, we conduct formative, process and outcome evaluation as well as one empirical study. Proof of LTPB's success on each campus has led to LTPB being recognized as a 'best practice' for tobacco control with young adults and has ensured continued financial support.
